WATERMILL'S PRODUCTION OF SWEENEY TODD WINS TWO TONY AWARDS
The Watermill Theatre's production of Sweeney Todd, which opened on Broadway last November, has scooped two prestigious Tony Awards.
Following it's sell-out run at The Watermill the show transfered to the West End and then to Broadway to great critical acclaim both in the UK and USA.
The Award for Best Musical Direction was won by Director, John Doyle and Best Orchestrations by Musical Director, Sarah Travis.
In her acceptance speech, Sarah Travis dedicated her award to Jill Fraser, the late Artistic Director of The Watermill Theatre.
"I'm deeply, deeply honored. Thank you so much. First of all I'd like to dedicate this award to Jill Fraser. She died earlier this year. She was the artistic director at the very special Watermill Theatre where this show began. The journey has been challenging. It's scary but always fulfilling and it's thanks firstly to Steve Sondheim. He has written the most brilliant score which continues to inspire and move people.
I'd also like to thank both the US and UK ensembles - a bunch of the most talented actors and musicians, who night after night go out and make wonderful music together and, by the way, there's no conductor. It's just miraculous. Thanks also to John for his vision, to David Loud for just being there, Don Moses Schreier for making it sound fantastic, Richard Jones, the Tom Viertel Group, to all at Richard Frankel's for their support, belief and friendship and all the team at the O'Neill Theatre. Thank you very much. This means so much to me."
