EDUCATION OUTREACH
The Watermill is a resource for the surrounding community and beyond. We take our shows to villages to provide access to professional theatre in rural areas; we help schools and colleges to deliver their curriculum; businesses to be more effective; and create opportunities for local people to be involved in the activities of their theatre.
Schools and Colleges
We work with a range of professional actors, directors, writers and artists, delivering workshops, performance lectures and talks designed in consultation with teachers, to assist in teaching their curriculum.
Our status as an award-winning producer of Shakespeare puts us in a wonderful position to help at any level – from an introduction to Shakespeare, through SAT’s exam preparation, to GCSE and A-level English and Drama. Other workshops include A-Level and GCSE set texts through story-telling and directing; and our extraordinary record as a producer of new writing means that we can also offer sessions on the art of scriptwriting.
Workshops linked to all our main productions enable groups to benefit from a visit to a show and then gain an insight into how the show was made. When our shows tour, we make sure that the workshops travel too, so that they are accessible to people all over the country. Our workshops are also available to clubs, societies and drama groups.
Reading and Understanding
Our actors visit local schools to animate and dramatise works that the children are already studying. This is a special project in partnership with West Berkshire Council to assist with primary school literacy classes.
In Service Training Days
We offer training days for teachers on Literacy Through Drama in the National Curriculum, Teaching Shakespeare in the Modern Classroom, and other related areas of study.
