THE WATERMILL’S PRODUCTION OF SUNSET BOULEVARD OPENS IN THE WEST END
The Watermill’s production of Sunset Boulevard opened in London’s Comedy Theatre on Monday to a plethora of rave reviews. Craig Revel Horwood’s production, which played to capacity houses at the beautiful Newbury venue earlier this year, was universally lauded for the extraordinary multi-talented actor-musician cast and for making the story the central focus. Musical Arranger and Tony Award winner Sarah Travis also received glowing reviews for her artful arrangements.
The cast includes Kathryn Evans as Norma Desmond and Ben Goddard as Joe Gillis both of whom appeared at The Watermill. Goddard, who played the lead in The Watermill’s Martin Guerre last year was singled out for particular praise.
Hedda Beeby The Watermill’s Artistic and Executive Director, who was in the first night audience, said:
"What an unforgettable night it was! The company, in terrific form, performed with great panache. At the curtain call the audience rose as one for a standing ovation which brought the company back time and time again. It really was one of those special theatrical occasions, full of glamour and celebrities. Andrew Lloyd Webber was in the audience and Strictly Come Dancing judges, Arlene Philips and Bruno Toniolli, plus lots of the show’s professional dancers and contestants. Graham Norton, who is heading for the West End next year was there too. It was a magical evening and it was difficult not to feel proud of the work that The Watermill team had put into the show to help pave its way into the West End."
