Funny, poignant and a few downright silly snapshots of what it’s like to live in Britain today, One Million Tiny Plays About Britain, entertained audiences last week during the first week of a rural tour to village halls and small theatres. Performing 30 of Craig Taylor’s miniature plays, Emma Barclay and Alec Nicholls play all the characters in a collage of scenes inspired by overheard conversations from around the UK.

'Alan Bennett's writing is famously and characteristically beautiful, lyrical and deeply human. Alongside George Fenton's stunning music, played by the cast, Alan weaves a beautiful tapestry of his childhood and of growing up with his parents, for whom he clearly feels a deep and unwaning affection. Combined with the intimacy of The Watermill auditorium this play promises to be a truly hypnotic, moving, uplifting and heart-warming evening.’

Director, Tom Attenborough

Meet the cast

Edward Bond’s outrageously funny and thought-provoking exploration of Edwardian society will be performed by Box Theatre Company from Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 April. Previously performed at The Royal Court Theatre and in the West End this amateur production tells the story of the conflict between the inhabitants of a village on the east coast of the UK, fuelled by a perceived threat of extra-terrestrials which spirals out of control!

Plundered!

Put on your pirate costume and join Really Big Pants Theatre Company when they bring their swashbuckling show Plundered! to The Watermill this Saturday.

Full of colourful characters, some perky puppets, songs to sing and games to play, Plundered! takes you on a journey to a tropical island in the Amazon to explore new habitats, learn about reusing and recycling, and looking after the world along the way.

Suitable for primary-aged children.

Saturday 16 April at 11am

Fourth Wall

We bid farewell to the cast of Romeo + Juliet following their exciting run at the theatre which brought in over 500 people who hadn’t been to The Watermill before. As well as the many young people who came and enjoyed our interpretation of the play, and gained a fresh insight, members of our Fourth Wall project (pictured here with members of the cast) got involved too. Students from Castle School and adults with learning disabilities created their own production of the play which was staged in the theatre. The end of a happy, moving and enlightening project coordinated by Lixi, our Community Associate.

Supper Club with Johannes von Stumm

If you’ve ever driven around Newbury’s Robin Hood roundabout, you will already be familiar with the work of local artist Johannes von Stumm whose striking sculpture sits at its centre. A well-known local sculptor and Chair of the Open Studios for Berkshire and Hampshire, Johannes has created many pieces of work in his unique style, which have gained him public and critical acclaim both in the UK and abroad. He will talk about how his ideas develop and the colourful life of a sculptor.

Tuesday 3 May
Supper served at 7.30pm, talk begins 8.30pm.
