A Watermill Theatre and Trademark Touring Production Thursday 20 September to Saturday 27 October TRIAL BY LAUGHTER by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman |
Ian Hislop, Nick Newman and the cast of Trial By Laughter |
Rehearsals are coming to a close for the premiere of Trial By Laughter, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman's new play about William Hone, the forgotten hero of free speech. In the early 19th century, William Hone was charged with blasphemous libel for satirising the government and royal family. Hone, assisted by his cartoonist ally George Cruikshank, defended himself in court on three successive days and famously used laughter to support his case.
Following the enormous success of The Wipers Times, Hislop and Newman blend humour and drama to tell the remarkable true story of how Hone fought for freedom in one of the most remarkable legal cases ever. Expect courtroom chaos, a thrilling narrative, and of course, jokes... plenty of jokes. |

Over the years, many visitors to The Watermill have admired the sculpture that sits in our Lily Pond Conservatory. The sculpture of a mother and child has been at The Watermill for many decades and we would love to find out who created it and give them credit for creating this beautiful piece of art. We believe it was created by a female sculptor in the 1960s who may have been based near Hungerford. If you recognise this sculpture (pictured right) and think you might know who created it, please email admin@watermill.org.uk or call 01635 45834. |
