News Story
At the Watermill Theatre, we believe that theatre is for everyone, so we are always striving to make our work and our venue as accessible as possible.
We are absolutely delighted to announce that, alongside our other access performances this summer, we will now be offering a Dementia Friendly performance for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Thu 16 Jul at 2.30pm.
What is a Dementia Friendly performance?
The show itself will be the same as any other performance, with the changes being in the atmosphere in the auditorium and the support offered. During the show, the auditorium will have low-level lighting, and there will be quiet spaces and chill-out areas for audience members to come and go from. Where usually, there are unspoken ‘rules’ to theatre etiquette, we will instead offer an inclusive environment, where movement, noise, and different expressions of enjoyment are welcomed throughout the show.
We’ll provide information before the show to help everyone prepare for their visit and have Dementia Friendly staff on the day, to offer support before, during and after the show. We also offer familiarisation visits to look around the theatre and get your bearings when the theatre is less busy.
All of these offerings during and around the performance are aimed at creating a relaxed and supportive experience for people living with dementia and those who support them
What other access performances do we offer?
We offer an extensive range of access performances throughout the year, including BSL integrated (where interpreters join the actors on stage) and BSL interpreted performances, closed-captioned performances, audio-described and touch tour performances, and relaxed performances.
