THE WATERMILL BOOK CLUB - SARA WHEELER

Mon 25 Jul 2011

An inspirational woman, Sara Wheeler is one of the finest travel writers and biographers of her generation. Access All Areas is a celebration of her  writing. The frozen poles of the earth feature frequently in her work, whether she is spending the night in Captain Scott’s hut or reliving the adventures of Shackleton and Nansen. Hot destinations – Malawi, Kerala, Cuba and Bangladesh are there too.

Worried that having children would end her roaming, she took them with her, to the Arctic, and on a brilliantly depicted cruise on the QE2. To add to her many talents, she has learnt to bellydance, to strip, and also to walk on the wing of a biplane at 3,000 feet.

She writes brilliantly of her heroes – Mary Kingsley, Fanny Trollope, Norman Lewis, Jan Morris and Sybille Bedford – and about the pains and pleasures of writing biography.

Spanning a career of twenty years, this collection gives an insight into the early journeys and literary heroes that have influenced and inspired this intrepid and talented writer.
