Access in 2024
14 March 2024
At The Watermill, access is at the heart of what we do. From dedicating ourselves to sign-integrated performances, to our state-of-the-art infrared hearing system, and our current Musical Sherlock Holmes and the Poison Wood being captioned, both creatively and openly.
So, heading into our 2024 season, we wanted to make sure we were pushing ourselves to make our theatre as friendly and accessible an environment as possible. We’ve listened to you, our audiences, and expanded our services to be broader than ever.
“You might notice in this coming season, as well as the most options for access performances we’ve ever offered, several of the access services overlap. This is a direct result of feedback from our audiences, because we try to be as responsive and flexible as we can.
And here’s the difference it makes… One couple are now able to visit the theatre together, because while she uses audio description, he uses captioning. Someone commented about a signed and captioned performance, “There were loads of things that made it really different… I’ve NEVER had both captioning and BSL, only ever one or the other, this is the first time I’ve had both and it felt fully accessible.”
